Cooking 101 - a two class series

Do you want to become more comfortable and knowledgeable in the kitchen? Do you want to make healthy home-made meals for your family and friends? Consider this class as a training ground. Under the expert guidance of an experienced chef you'll learn how to use seasonally available products to produce tasty, economical meals. Registration is limited so book early. All about Cake Pops

Join us for 2 hours of cake pop making fun! Under the expert guidance of Shelley Nikkel, owner of Hot Cakes, you will decorate six cake pops, which will be yours to take home. We will provide the cake, frosting, melting chocolate, decorations, aprons and packaging. The class begins with a demonstration on how to crumble the cake, how much to mix with icing and roll the pops, followed by dipping and a number of different decorating methods.

Summer Cooking Camp for Kids - Summer 2013

Are you raising a budding Chef or does your child love to be in the kitchen? Do we have a camp for you! This year we are offering two week-long, half-day camp sessions your little chefs who want to be challenged in the kitchen. Camp sessions will take a fun-filled approach and will include the following basic skills for living: how to plan, prepare and pack safe lunches for school, kitchen courtesy and safety rules, table manners, menu planning and more. We'll end off the week with a meal challenge . . .

Learn the simple techniques necessary to create light french pastry by hand. Understand how to turn and layer the pastry. We'll finish these off with a selection of sweet and savoury fillings. If you want to make Croissants, this is the class for you!

 

 

Cooking 101 for Youth

Give your children the gift of cooking. This series mirrors the aims of the adult program with a kid-friendly approach. We will focus on knife skills; making soups, stocks and sauces from scratch; exploring different cooking techniques with vegetables and proteins, and healthy meal choices. If your child enjoys working in the kitchen or not and needs to become more independent, this is a good place to be. Suitable for 14 year olds and over. Individual classes may also be taken from the series.

 

Baking Series for Youth

Give your child the gift of baking. Taught by a professional baker, this series will give your child the skills to produce mouthwatering baked goods for the whole family. Individual classes will focus on basic breads, sweet doughs and pastries, cake/pie basics. Suitable for 14 year olds and over. Individual classes may also be taken form the series.

Wine Pairing Class
Based on client recommendations we are offering a new experience with food and wine. With the expert guidance of Flavia Fernandez-Fabio, Wine Consultant with La Vie en Vin, discover the “mystery” of wine pairing and learn the best tips to match flavours. Five wines will be served with a selection of dried and fresh fruits, different spices, cheeses and tapas. You will experience how foods and wine can “dance” on the palate. The Art of French Macaroons

French Macarons, a 100% gluten free confection, are the new sweet trend. Made up of ground almonds, icing sugar and egg whites, macarons have a number of steps to ensure they have a delightfully soft & chewy texture. Under the expert guidance of Shelley Nikkel of Hot Cakes, you will learn how to prepare the mixture, flavour, pipe, bake and layer up these sweet treats. Each guest will prepare a dozen of their own to take home. We will provide the ingredients, equipment, aprons and packaging .

Knife Skills

Learn to use different types of kitchen knives and keep them sharp. Bring your own paring, chef and boning knives to practice cleaning, sharpening and de-boning chicken or fish. Practice different cuts with a variety of vegetables and a practical focus on butchery for stocks and soups. Each person will go home with a clean chicken and vegetables for own meal creations. City of Winnipeg Food Handlers Course

All food handling establisments with five or fewer employees are required to have at least one staff person who has successfully completed the City of Winnipeg training course. We offer a five hour session which includes: review of the 11 essential units, practise tests, exam and a meal. This is a great course for home makers as well as those employed in the food industry at all levels.
